NSW PSYCHOLOGISTS REGISTRATION BOARD REQUIREMENTS

The following is quoted from the Psychologists Act 2001:

Qualifications for Registration
A person who is of good character is entitled to be registered as a psychologist if:

(a) the person:

(i) has successfully completed a course of at least 4 years full-time study (or an equivalent period of part-time study) specialising in psychology and provided by a tertiary institution recognised by the Board; or

(ii) holds or is eligible to hold such qualifications from a tertiary institution recognised by the Board as are prescribed by the regulations; or

(iii) holds or is eligible to hold such qualifications as the Board considers are equivalent to the qualifications referred to in subparagraph (i) or (ii) and passed such examination (if any) conducted by the Board to determine whether the person has the requisite qualifications for registration; and

(b) the person has two years practical experience in psychology satisfactory to the Board.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE ASSESSMENT
Before final acceptance, prospective interns are required to attend for an assessment.

The purpose of this assessment is to determine suitablity as a psychologist practitioner, that is, is a "people person". Graduates who are more interested in "rats and stats" than in people may have difficulties with the results.

The results of this assessment are fed back to the individual candidate. Candidates who are not considered suitable are provided with alternative career prospects.
